Technical Director – Live Events

WEBB Production is a creative event production agency handling large scale events that range from 300 to 30,000 attendees throughout the United States and occasionally outside the US. WHAT YOU’LL DO

As the Technical Director, you are the crucial element that brings everything together. Every event starts with the client, and our producer and creative team transform the client's themes and goals into actionable designs and concepts. From there, you take the lead to make it happen by connecting department heads, event staff, labor department, and operations teams.

    Your responsibilities will include:
  • Site Visits and Floor Plans: Conducting site visits and utilizing Vectorworks design software to create and manage detailed floor plan drawings, ensuring accurate representation of event layouts and efficient space utilization.
  • Technical/Production Meetings: Attending and contributing to technical and production meetings to align on project goals and requirements.
    Technical Advising and Support:
  • Determining Technical Requirements: Identifying the necessary technical support for each project, including lighting, sound, staging, digital/interactive elements, and special needs.
  • Advising on Technical Specifications: Providing expert guidance to Producers, and lighting, sound, audio, video, and scenic designers on technical specifications, costs, and equipment usage.
  • Supervising Technical Implementation: Overseeing the implementation of approved technical designs to ensure successful event execution.
  • Budget Understanding and Maintenance:
  • Project Budgets: Collaborating with the Producer to understand and maintain budgets for specific build aspects of each project, ensuring they fit within the overall project budget.
  • Production Budgets: Assisting the Producer in maintaining overall production budgets by understanding the breakdowns and differences of where money is spent, and helping to track expenses.
  • Design and Operation: Designing, setting up, maintaining, and operating lighting, sound systems, video, interactive, and social media elements for all productions and projects. While specialists will assist you, a general comfort and growing expertise in these areas is essential.
  • Project Timeline Management: Keeping project deadlines on track before the event and closely monitoring timelines during the event to ensure timely execution.
  • Showsite Management and Event Safety: Ensuring the safety of the event through effective management and adherence to safety protocols.
  • Showsite Leadership: Leading the setup and strike crews, managing docks, and owning logistics from truck unloading to reloading and everything in between.
  • Labor Management: Documenting labor hours to efficiently manage setup without overbooking labor. Work in conjunction with our Labor Department to maintain the profitability of events.
  • Event Safety Management: Ensuring the safety of the event through effective management and adherence to safety protocols.

  • Technical Knowledge and Event Experience: You have a strong technical background and are comfortable handling a wide range of technical issues. Your experience includes knowledge of techniques, methods, and procedures for indoor/outdoor events and music productions, interactive consumer technologies, and presentations, including stage, set, sound, and lighting design and implementation. You are also familiar with stage management, computerized lighting systems, stage carpentry, and appropriate safety precautions and procedures.
Key responsibilities
  • Experience: 3-4 years of direct experience in technical direction or event project management with a portfolio showcasing your work.
  • Technical Proficiency: Working knowledge of lighting, sound, and video design, and the ability to execute these designs effectively.
  • Design Skills: Proficiency in drafting and design, including but not limited to plans/elevations and construction documents.
  • Software Skills:
  • Essential: Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Suite.
  • Preferred: Working knowledge of Vectorworks and Monday.com.
  • Bonus Points For: Experience with CAD, InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator.
  • Client-Facing Experience: Demonstrated experience in a client-facing role with executives and senior-level professionals.
  • Location and Travel: Ability to work out of our Salt Lake City office on a daily basis and willingness to travel for productions as needed.
  • Soft Skills: Excellent organizational skills, strong leadership abilities, and a proactive, solution-driven mindset.
